Life style culture :Art/Music/Dance Self-expression. It is at the core of every Bahamian. Whether through our colorful art, lively music or soulful dancing, it is a part of each of us. And it reflects the beauty of our islands. The pride we have for our home and in each other. Music plays a big part in Bahamian culture. Throughout our islands, you’ll hear traces of African rhythms, Caribbean Calypso, English folk songs and our unique Bahamian Goombay traditional music, which combines African musical traditions with European colonial influences. Goombay can be traced back to slavery and is storytelling and dancing performed to a fast-tempoed “goom-bahhh” beat on a goatskin drum. African slaves had very few resources to create instruments. Rake and scrape bands had drums made out of a pork barrel and goatskin, a carpenter’s saw that was scraped with a metal file, maracas, rhythm sticks, and a bass violin made from a washtub and string. Today, rake and scrape bands use modern instruments mixed with saws and goatskin drums. Bahamian Cuisine Being an international destination, you can rest assured that you can find any type of food here. But while you’re here, give your taste buds a chance to discover Bahamian cuisine. It’s spicy and uniquely flavored. Seafood is the staple of our diet. Fresh conch scored with a knife and sprinkled with lime juice and spices is delicious. Other delicacies you’ll enjoy are land crabs and the Bahamian “rock lobster.” We also love fresh fish, especially boiled fish served with grits. Many dishes here are served with pigeon peas and rice mixed with spices, tomatoes and onions. Wash down our cuisine with a cold beverage like a Kalik or Sands, beers of The Islands Of The Bahamas, a Bahama Mama, or Goombay Smash. There’s also a Bahamian favorite that we call “Sky Juice,” coconut water blended with sweet milk and gin. And don’t forget to try Switcher, a refreshing drink made from native limes. Bush Medicine Bush medicine is using indigenous plants for medicinal purposes. It’s a tradition African slaves brought with them when they came here. There are almost 100 plants found here that can be used for medical treatment. Examples include aloe vera, crab bush, fig leaf, sailors\' flowers and white sage. Junkanoo Junkanoo is uniquely Bahamian and exists nowhere else. It’s an incredibly energetic, colorful parade made up of brightly costumed Bahamians dancing and “rushin” to the music of cowbells, drums, horns and whistles. It is widely believed that Junkanoo was created by John Canoe, an African tribal chief who demanded the right to celebrate with his people even after he was brought to the West Indies as a slave. Celebrated since the 16th or 17th century, today Junkanoo has grown into an organized event with groups of up to 1,000 persons competing for cash prizes for best music, best costume, dancer, banner and best overall group presentation. Traditionally held on New Year’s Day, Boxing Day and Independence Day, parades are also held during the annual “Junkanoo Summer Festival” and the “Just Rush” competition. In addition, many hotels offer Junkanoo shows for their guests throughout the year. Religion Religion is important in the lives of the Bahamian people. Even small communities have several churches. Our religious devotion is evidence of the Eleutheran Adventurers and their Puritan influences. Straw Market Explore one of our straw markets and bring home a piece of Bahamian culture. You’ll find handmade hats, mats, baskets, woodcarvings and guava jellies. Test your bargaining skills and get a good deal on a great piece.
Languages spoken :English is our official language. Although, you might hear Bahamian English. It’s a mixture of Queen’s diction, African influence and island dialect.

1st Class Beach House Away from it all

This house blow me and my friends away. It is first class all the way. And the ocean views from the rooms are amazing. The beach in your backyard felt like your own private beach because there is no one around. The only down side might be an upside, it is a 30 minute drive to the center of Freeport, to where all the action and people are. If you are looking to get away from the busy then this house will exceed all your expectations.

A Dream Vacation!!

We stayed at this home in Grand Bahama\'s in August of 2007. It was a total dream. A very secluded beach..just like on a movie! It was extremely clean and very well maintained! The beds slept well. The ocean right outside the front door was crystal clear, and the snorkling was awesome!! Shells and coral everywhere! The caretaker and his family were very nice and helpful! Thank you so much for a dream come true!

Perfect Vacation House

The house is absolutely gorgeous!! Very clean and spacious. Easily accommodated group of 10 adults - we never felt crowded. Huge improvement over staying at a resort and getting individual rooms for each couple. We were able to spend more time together having coffee in the morning or relaxing on the lanai reading in the afternoons. Yet there is plenty of room to find some quiet time by yourself is wanted too. Only downside would be the distance from Port Lucaya/Freeport. It is about a half hour drive into town so we just opted to spend more time at the house grilling dinner rather than going out so often. We will most likely return to the home when we travel to the Bahamas again. Plus, Julie was a pleasure to work with - very informative. Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children, people with disabilities, romantic getaway.

Beautiful Sunsets

The house is really lovely and well equipped...except for the kitchen. We found ourselves \"making do\" to cope with the lack of utensils/equipment for preparing meals. Because the house is remote we ate many of our meals in (which we prefer anyway). There were 2 wine glasses...not quite adequate for a house that sleeps 10. On the other hand there were about 30 coffee cups! The beach wass fabulous except when the tide was in...then there was no beach,,,just rocks and washed up coral. (Be sure to take reef shoes, Tivas or the like). The change in the beach as the tide changed was remarkable. When the tide was out the children had a great time playing on the sandbars and in the sea and the sand. If you\'ve ever dreamed of vacationing on a deserted island this comes pretty close. During the entire week we saw a total of 4 other people on the beach; 2 people on 2 separate occasions. Rev. Freddie gave us the name of a couple of the local fishermen from whom we bought the \"catch of the day\"; grouper, mutton snapper; lobster on several occasions...the one drawback is the 30+ min. drive to the boat dock. The house is located close to Lucaya National Park where various tour groups come to kayak and hike. We tried to rent kayaks but couldn\'t find anyone on the island who would rent kayaks for a few days or a week. All the kayaks were tied to a tour company and were needed for the tour outings. That was a disappointment. When all is said and done we will go back and have recommended the house to friends. It\'s quiet, relaxing, idyllic, all in a very private location. The sea is fabulous...the view from the house is remarkable. If you want to get away from it all you\'ve found the place. Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children.

Can\'t wait to come back!

I cannot say enough about this home. We stayed for a memorable 2 weeks in late January, early February \'09. We had 13 total people, 2 of which were babies, and never felt crowded or like we were tripping over one another once the entire time. Reverend Laing and his wife were very accommodating and kind. The solitude was amazing, and I find it difficult to not daydream about our next visit! I would highly recommend this property to anyone who truly wants to get away from it all. It was 2 of the best weeks of our life. Our children loved it, were never bored and left with nothing but the best of memories. Next time I might go a bit later in the year, as it was unseasonably chilly while we visited, but still a fabulous vacation overall! Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

\"Our stay was, as before, perfectly wonderful. The accommodations are so well-planned for a group, and the weather, and even the airlines, all cooperated beautifully. Stepping in the front door, even after several stays, is always a delightful surprise---every bit as good as you remember. The new porch furniture is perfect. It is our hope to be able to return next year.\"
