Grandfather bought this farm 90 years ago - the ice house and barns are gone, original house now has 70' of porches and huge veggie garden - lots of summer guests. I live in Ft Lauderdale, on the ocean am a Realtor been in the original house 81years this summer. Robert Kelsey purchased this Cottage in 1926
This rustic country cabin(s) on Lake Champlain is exactly what I wanted to experience on the Islands. Bob Kelsey was extremely helpful and is eager to please. He knows the area and where to go for restaurants or whatever your liking is! I plan to come back and will let my wonderful week of relaxation and not be at work to set in!
Very nice . Great owner
We were a party of 10 w 6 adults, 4 children (9,7,6,3) & 1 dog so we rented both cottages. If we could base our review on how happy the kids were, it would be a 5. They loved the swimming, jumping off the dock, fishing, & roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. We had stellar weather. We were well aware of the 1 negative review but are comfortable w rustic & it sounded like a bit of sour grapes, so in light of the several 5 star reviews & phone conversations w owner Bob, we rented for 1 week. I'm sorry to report that the earlier 1 star review was accurate-see their comments re safety issues w electrical wiring & no smoke detectors (newly installed Monday). The electrical issues are serious & extensive. We arrived at 2 pm after being told we could get there at noon w the caveat that they may still be working. Indeed, linens were being replaced....but it did not appear that any other cleaning had occurred, or would occur. In contrast to the posted description as "crazy clean", bathrooms were disgusting (toilets, tubs), floors & carpets were dirty, coffee & grounds in the pot, Etc. The outside of both cottages were covered in bugs & cobwebs. I swept off the front of the little cottage, vacuumed, cleaned the bathrooms. When I called Bob, he apologized & said he guessed he hadn't gotten to the bathrooms. A refrigerator had to be replaced mid week. Screens are separated from the porch frame in several places & window screens were poorly fitting. The mosquito population was healthy inside & out. While the description states that 6 acres are mowed, about 1 acre around the house appears to be maintained. It was very private which was great. Helpful tips: Water shoes are a must for swimming bc of rocks. Protect food from mice & carpenter ants. Lake water is what comes from the tap so bring bottled water for drinking, coffee, tooth brushing. Cone style coffee filters. Fun & free concerts on the islands. Check out White Beach in S Hero, Art Works on Grand Isle, Island ice cream, Goodsell Ridge Preserve & Fisk Quarry. So to summarize, the cottages appear like tired hunting camps that need serious attention. The property is for sale. The setting is lovely w fabulous sunsets every night. The owner was responsive. It was a fun, peaceful family vacation, but not without issues.
The property is very much as described. Both cottages are comfy and cozy. There is lots of privacy and the fishing is fantastic. We caught lots of perch and bass. My toy fox terrier had a great time with lots of running space. Bob was a really great host and super accommodating. We all came back from our vacation happy and relaxed. I hope to be able to spend time here again in the future.
Just spent a week in Bob’s camps, this makes four trips to North Hero in the past seven years, each time staying with Bob. Its back to the basics, the way it was when life was simple, like stepping back to a time when people made due, not expecting someone to do everything for them. From the long spring slamming the screen door shut, no hydraulic door closer here, to the pump house that brings water up to the camps, it’s actually the old outhouse from decades ago, now serving as the pump house: here time feels unchanging. We bring the boat to fish, but the largest bass we ever caught anywhere was while we sat on shore, in lawn chairs, only 30 feet from the sliding glass doors of the large bedroom, in the trailer, overlooking the bay. I wonderful time with a wonderful host.
What a great spot for a cabin and converted retro motortrailer right on the lake! I had my sister's family with me and between the usual hassles of vacationing with family, this was the perfect spot to not only get away from the hustle and bustle of life, but also privacy from family once in a while. Perfect for fishing, canoeing and watching beautiful sunsets, the master host and owner Bob made everything "just right" with all of our simple requests. What a beautiful location for a perfect vacation!
We were returned to the cottage for our second consecutive year and had a wonderful experience on both occasions! We brought along two 10 year olds and our half crazy dog Yodi. We stayed in the larger cottage which has plenty of room for more. I believe it was built in the 1920's and has a great deal of character. Unlike one of the previous reviewers, we were not expecting, or desiring a stay at the Hilton. If you are, don't stay here, but if you would like you and your kids to be away from your cell phones, with days filled with fishing, sunsets and simplicity, by all means, stay here! The owner of the property, Bob, was very accommodating to our every need. In fact, the other cottage was vacant the week we were there, and we asked Bob if, perhaps we could rent it for a couple of nights as we had friends who were planning on a visit. He said to not worry about it, "Let them enjoy it"! A couple of days later some one called who wanted to rent the second cottage for the week. Bob approached us and asked us if it was ok. He was actually going to let us have the cabin for free rather than rent it for a fee. Now that's service. Of course we thanked Bob for his consideration, but told him to make some money during the short season. We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable, as the previous reviewer had, nor did we expect polished silver and room service! It bothers me that one who may expect this from a 1920's cabin would write such a caustic review without consideration of possible consequences to the owner. She may want to stay closer to home in New Jersey!
We stayed in the smaller cottage and had a really great time. It's a converted 60's trailer, very cool, but roomy enough for two. It's so close to the lake, you wake up to the lake right in front of you and can watch the sunset every night. We canoed (canoe provided) almost every day, found an osprey nest, it was very fun. North Hero is very cute, we would definitely consider renting again, probably renting both cottages. The owner was extremely helpful, just a great experience.
