DIRECTIONS TO SUNSET BEACH

Sunset Beach is in Southeastern North Carolina. It is the last Island in North Carolina. The island is about 7 miles off U.S. 17 at Highway 904. Coming from the North turn Left on to 904 (from the South turn Right). Take 904 to the second traffic light (roughly 4 miles from the intersection with U.S. 17). Turn right and follow the signs to Sunset Beach. The bridge onto the island is approximately 2 more miles. At the circle take the Mannon Gore bridge, 1 more mile to Main St. Turn right on to West Main St. 201 is on the Left at the corner of 28th St. 903 in on the Left just past 35th St.

THE BEAUTIFUL BEACH in NORTH CAROLINA

Sunset Beach, formally known as Bald Beach, is the southernmost island in North Carolina. The island was purchased in 1955 by Mannon C. Gore from the Brooks family, which dates its ownership back to the 1700's. Mannon Gore, a farmer by trade, possessed vast skills in bridge building and dredging business. Using these skills, Mr. Gore began his vision of Sunset Beach by designing and building the causeway and the first pontoon swing bridge onto the island. Mr. Gore also built the original Vesta Pier on the island named after a civil war blockade runner that now rests buried in the sand beside the present Sunset Beach pier. Property sales began in 1958 and Sunset Beach has grown in every way since. To aid Mannon Gore, his son Edward M. Gore, Sr. joined the business in the late 1950's. Together they successfully developed and shaped the island into what the island is today. As the amazing island's beaches grow, we continue to maintain the easy feeling of yesteryear’s when times were simpler.

Great Location

This is a nice 5 bedroom beach house. The best feature was the large screened-in porch. Though it sleeps 14 people, that is way too many to stay there. The kitchen is very tiny but adequately supplied. No more than2 people at a time can fit in it. The bathrooms were very small as well, with no place for storing your toiletries. The house was clean but I only gave it a 3-star rating because the downstairs bedroom had an extremely moldy smell and there was sand on the bed. It seemed that no one had used it in sometime and it greatly needed to be aired out. The rest of the house was did not have this problem. Overall, it was a nice place to stay.

Fun stay- House nice but could use some TLC

House was roomy. It had a musty smell upon arrival but by the second day seemed to have gone away -except in the downstairs room - we ended up not using it b/c the smell was so strong - thankful the place was larger than we needed. The owner was nice but didn’t do anything to help with the couple of issues I’d mentioned other than lend an ear. There were no lights in the carport and it was very dark at night. Seemed to be on a motion sensor but wasn’t consistent and had trouble getting the lights by motion even. Could not get fishing lines ready down there which was a pain. King bed in guest room sags in the middle and is at the end of its life (I did not mention to Owner.). There were some bulbs out in a bathroom and the cover on a bedroom light was off. Mentioned these as I didn’t want to lose damage deposit and he said he knew-said he was planning on fixing all of that this winter. Said he’d not heard anyone complain about a musty smell before. One other thing worth mentioning is that there is a large layer of sand dune between the house and the beach so the view of the ocean is blocked and the walk to the beach is approx 1/4 mile to the down a wooden boardwalk- which is still close but I think I was expecting to see the waves and the beach from the house which was not the case.

Great Time! Plenty of space

This property had plenty of space for my three families vacationing together (3 adults, 3 young adults and 2 teens) the fifth bedroom being accessible from the outside only was great for my Mom who is in her 70’s and could escape our noise at night when she wanted to go to sleep. The screened in porch was great to read on and enjoy the breeze or watch the cool thunderstorms. Kitchen was really equipped. House was clean and well maintained and decorated. The Beach was pristine and although a longer walk through the dunes than I anticipated, it was an easy walk on a decked path the whole way and my youngest son was able to see some tree frogs, stick bugs, and a praying mantis because the dunes where deep. The beach chairs and beach cart could stand to be replaced. Thankfully we brought some of our own beach chairs so we had enough. The single bed mattresses could be more comfortable and fifth bedroom mattress could stand to be replaced as it sinks in in the middle. We went to the planetarium on a rainy day and had an amazing show. Myrtle Beach is a short 30 minute drive. We went there to the tiger preservation exhibit and my kids held a tiger cub and gibbon. Very cool pirate show, dinner and shops as well. My son also went mountain biking near Myrtle beach. However, you can find lots to do without ever leaving sunset beach and while a Myrtle beach visit is good it can’t compare to the beach at sunset beach. Went golfing at Brunswick plantation with my son. Nice course with friendly people. Hit at the big cats driving range also nice. Overall really well kept house with plenty of space a dunes walk to the beach with amazing views of the ocean, in a great town.

Grand

We had a grand time at the Grey Dolphin. Our group of six adults and five children wanted for nothing. The house is close to the pier, which makes fishing rather handy. We feel that the pricing is very reasonable. We would recommend it without reservation. The owner is a true gentleman.
