We rented Kyle’s van for five days in August, and it was great! He was super flexible for drop off/pick up locations and timing, and made the whole journey to the Gwaii quite seamless. Everyone on island seemed to know the infamous avocado van, and we were happy to show it off to anyone who asked!
The van was a great way to explore Haida Gwaii! The tips Kyle left for us helped us plan our route and it didn’t take long to get in the swing of things. Unfortunately the Stand up paddle-board wasn’t available but he was willing to accommodate us with other options. The van was in great shape and aside from a brief moment or two it ran great! Kyle was available whenever we had questions as well (whenever there was service at least!) would definitely recommend the avocado westy to anyone looking to visit.
Exploring Haida Gwaii in Kyle's Westie was the exact experience I was hoping for. It allowed us to travel the island at our leisure and camp in beautiful seaside spots. Kyle was happy to answer all of our questions and even checked in with us to let us know about things happening on island. It was the perfect trip!
Wow! This was for my wife and young son (toddler) a super vacation. With the green Westy we were able to explore the main roads and the communities along the paved section with ease and style. The van for driving: The Westy was relatively straight forward on the road. Steering around campsites and parking lots required more effort to move the wheel but aside from that drives like a normal Vehicle. Gas consumption was fairly reasonable even though the Westy requires premium- we for 3 days of exploration it was less than 100$. The owner had given very detailed instructions on how to best care for the Westy- starting warmup time was essential. Van was in good repair, oil change was just done when we got it. Even though its older it is well loved and cared for. The van for dwelling: we spent 3 nights in the Westy. stayed at 3 camping specific Parks on the island which are all very easy to find. My family is used to tent camping Lots of set up and take down...But! with the Westy it was like we had virtually no set up to do. We just park on a level surface and rearrange the necessary items within the vehicle to change into “dwelling mode”. It was easy (for my taller self) to snap the rooftop tent up and would have a second bed made in less than a minute. the lower bed is also easy to deploy. The van is water tight. Bug Screen is in good condition aside from one small hole. Van was clean, and had no odd smells. The design of the inner compartments is so user friendly and makes for a very enjoyable and tidy space once you settled. Kyle is a friendly dude host/owner who will assist you in anyway to make your trip a success. Whenever I had any question on our journey regarding the Westy or tips on the Island Kyle was very helpful and gave his time to ensure we were in for a good time. The island cell reception is a thing to note: the only available cell service is near and around the major communities on the island. Overall an amazing experience.
Kyle was amazing. Everything we needed was in the van. We are avid campers. So this was perfect for us. A great adventure, people were so nice. Can't wait to do it again.
The Westy is a cozy way to camp. We parked at Agate Beach Campground. The bed is comfy and warm, and the loud constant surf is almost silenced when the doors are closed. The campground had a constant wind, so we cooked in the Westy, out of the wind. That worked very well. It's also a nice place to retreat when the weather gets too cold or wet. Kyle is warm and gracious, and responded to our questions and changes of arrival time. He even checked on us in person to make sure we got to the campground and had what we needed. The interior was clean and had no odors, which is a pleasant surprise, considering the vehicle's age. (A couple of repairs on the curtains, vent, and charger are in order.) The Westy drives well, but there are some quirks. The fan belt squeals, and the engine can be difficult to start, since there's a parking switch for the ignition that doesn't always sit properly. Nonetheless, we didn't have a problem, and the van handled well on the gravel road to the campground. We were disappointed that we didn't get propane to power the appliances as promised, and that we couldn't use the sink. We were able to cook anyway, but we would have liked to use the fridge and sink. Overall, it's a fun way to spend a few days on a spectacular beach!
