Homer city in Alaska got its name from Homer Pennock, who promoted a company that indulged in gold mining. Homer Pennock arrived in this area in 1896. At that time, he had begun building houses for all the fifty men who came there with him. Unfortunately, that area did not serve the purpose Homer Pennock was looking for. Homer became the HALIBUT FISHING CAPITAL. Some termed it as THE END OF THE ROAD and some called it THE COSMIC HAMLET BY THE SEA. It is situated in Kenai Peninsula. The population of Homer was estimated in 2005 as 5,364. The total area is 22.4 sq. miles. Eleven sq. miles in this, area is water. 10.6 sq. miles of it is land. Halibut fishing, salmon fishing, tourism, logging and commercial fishing are the main industries that operate within and outside the city of Homer. Kenai Peninsula has the Kachemak Bay in its southwest and this town is situated on shores of that bay. There people can witness wonders of nature in watching the mountains, wildlife and glaciers.

This city has a distinguished feature called Homer Spit. It is 4.5 mile long bar of gravels that connects Kachemak Bay. There travelers shall get to see the Homer Harbor, camping zones and various shops. A famous fishing hole can be found here which has been talked about since years. Today, there are good number of joggers, campers, surfers, boaters and shoppers who love coming to this place. There is a lot of history that surrounds this place. Homer Spit is generally believed to be an exposed section of a moraine that was underwater. The spit can disappear eventually but it may take much more time for that to happen.
