Durango is a part of La Plata county Colorado, USA. It has a very big population. The USA Census Bureau estimated the population of this city as 16,887 in the census held in 2010.

This town got organized in 1881. DENVER AND RIO GRANDE RAILROAD (D&RG) organized this district for serving San Juan district for mining. The city got its name from Durango in Mexico. The city’s name has its origination from a word "Urango" which means a town filled with water.

Durango is located in Animas River Valley which is bounded by San Juan range of mountains. Animas River is like a lifeline of this city and is filled with flying fishes. Some popular adventure sports played here are kayaking, rafting and canoeing. This town is also famous for outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, road biking, hunting, rock climbing, off-roading, kayaking, golfing and fishing. This city is close to ski areas such as, Purgatory at Durango Mount Resort, situated at a distance of twenty-five minutes from northern part of downtown. Mesa Verde National Park is situated at a distance of thirty-five miles towards west of the town. It is WORLD HERITAGE SITE hailed by UNESCO.
 
This city is most famous for Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a railway system also considered to be a heritage railway, the railway routes go from this city to Silverton which is a part of glorious history that goes back to the periods of mining. The trains ran since 1920s

A Snowdown Fest is held every year, which boasts of a parade and lots of fireworks. The parade takes place on last Friday in the month of January or first Friday in February. A close by town Pagosa Springs, hosts an annual Music in the Mountains festival. This fest has great performances by the best classical musicians of the world.

Main Avenue has high standard clothing boutiques, eating joints, newsstands, souvenir shops, shopping mall, pubs, lounges etc. Many skyscrapers are of good heights, the top floors of many such buildings are at upper levels. Two old hotels, The General Palmer and The Strater Hotel, are at southern end of town, the railway station is very close from both the hotels. All kinds of cuisine namely French, Thai, Lebanese, Mexican, Japanese and Indian are available while some prefer to have American favorites. Main Avenue is a walking zone for thousands of visitors every week. This makes it a hub for shopping as well as relaxing hot spot in the city.

A shopping center slightly smaller than Wal-mart serves as a regional airport center for all  south west of Colorado, USA. This city has many bus routes for serving the people. IGNACIO ROAD RUNNER gives a bus service that run from here to neighboring towns of Bayfield and Ignacio. For staying people can go for vacation rentals.
